KAREN IS A PARTNER at LURIE FRIEDMAN LLP.
Her practice involves a wide variety of complex business litigation matters including financial services, business torts, misappropriation of trade secrets and confidential information, violation of non-competition and non-solicitation clauses, unfair and deceptive trade practices, breach of contract, partnership, landlord/tenant and real estate-related disputes. She has represented pension funds, banks, real estate developers, tech companies, and a wide variety of local, national and foreign businesses. She practices in state, and federal court, and has significant experience with mediation.
Karen joined the firm in 2005. She was formerly a litigation associate at Brown Rudnick LLP.
Representative Engagements
Among other matters, Karen’s recent litigation experience includes:
Prevailed on summary judgment in representation of general partner and non-profit sponsor of affordable housing in dispute with limited partners over non-profit’s ability to exercise right of first refusal to obtain ownership of multi-million dollar low-income tax credit housing project. Successfully defended judgment before Supreme Judicial Court. Homeowner’s Rehab, Inc. v. Related Corp. V SLP, 479 Mass. 741 (2018).
Defended owner/developer of multi-unit private student housing in landlord/tenant class action. Successfully mediated settlement in which insurer paid over 90% of the settlement.
In action for fraud and violations of Massachusetts Securities Act, secured real estate attachments, trustee process and injunctive relief for individual investors defrauded by investment fund manager operating Ponzi-scheme. Recovered funds for investors and investment fund manager was incarcerated.
On behalf of commercial property owner faced with clean-up of historic hazardous waste contamination, negotiated complex six-figure settlement representing 75% of response costs with multinational conglomerate who had acquired original polluter.
After obtaining an injunction and other preliminary relief, recovered wrongfully withheld deposit and attorneys’ fees for purchasers of new restaurant business.
Obtained six-figure settlement for utility expense reduction company against two major healthcare institutions through mediation of federal lawsuit and related arbitration for breach of utility expense reduction agreements.
Negotiated favorable settlements for Dutch pension funds in federal lawsuits against major provider of investment and trust services for failure to disclose material risks of collective investment funds that were rendered worthless upon the failure of Lehman Brothers.
Education & Admissions
Karen received her J.D. in 1986 from Boston University School of Law where she was an editor of the Law Review. She received her B.A. in English from Williams College in 1981. She also received an M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in 1996 from the State University of New York, Stony Brook. She has taught overseas and in a large urban high school outside Chicago.
Karen is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and before the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
